About Ailish

She studied at the Florence Academy of Art in Italy, where she focused on figurative sculpture and drawing in the tradition of the masters. Conway earned a BFA in Fine Arts with a minor in Art History from Kutztown University of Pennsylvania. Her work has been exhibited in galleries across the United States, including at GoggleWorks Center for the Arts in Reading, Pennsylvania. While working primarily in figurative sculpture and drawing, Conway explores the expressive qualities of the human form and seeks to capture the inner life and beauty of the soul.

Artist Statement

By the creation of my sculptures and mixed media drawings, there is an exploration of the themes of life, loneliness, and our origins from particles. Rooted in personal experiences and heavily influenced by the science of creation, death, and the fading of memory, my work constructs a world in which these fears are ever-present, ready to strike at any moment, piercing through the world we live in. In my realm of work, I like to create an environment that is a still moment of time that gets into the personal spaces of the viewers and grasps their emotions, making them feel lost in deep thoughts.

My sculptures are primarily made from clay, which is cast in resin and finished with colored patinas. In my mixed media drawings, I use India ink, oil pastels, chalk, spray paint, and charcoal. For both of my media, I am fascinated by how light interacts with the body, producing shadows that evoke emotions associated with living beings. Light plays a crucial role in my art, shaping forms and creating shadows that set the mood. These shadows extend beyond the physical, symbolizing themes such as absence, loss, and decay.

Using layered clay throughout the creation of human figures and other creatures, I aim to evoke the emotional nuances of past experiences and their slow fading over time. My drawings and sculptures sit at the intersection of presence and disappearance, where time, space, matter, memory, and the subtle merging of souls come together to produce a visual artwork that captures a deeply personal emotional moment between the viewer and my pieces.
